The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK), since 1921 comprises four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is situated on the islands. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south.

England covers five-eighths of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North Atlantic, and includes over 100 smaller islands, such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight. It is the largest country of the British Isles. The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, a Germanic tribe deriving its name from the Anglia peninsula, who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world.

Scotland (Scots: Scotland, Scottish Gaelic: Alba is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain, with a border with England to the southeast, and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, the North Sea to the northeast, the Irish Sea to the south, and more than 790 islands, including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides. Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It is bordered by England to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, and the Bristol Channel to the south. It had a population in 2011 of 3,063,456 and has a total area of 20,779 km2 (8,023 sq mi).

Welsh national identity emerged among the Britons after the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the 5th century, and Wales is regarded as one of the modern Celtic nations. Llywelyn ap Gruffudd's death in 1282 marked the completion of Edward I of England's conquest of Wales, though Owain Glyndŵr briefly restored independence to Wales in the early 15th century. The whole of Wales was annexed by England and incorporated within the English legal system under the Laws in Wales Acts 1535 and 1542. Distinctive Welsh politics developed in the 19th century. Welsh Liberalism, exemplified in the early 20th century by Lloyd George, was displaced by the growth of socialism and the Labour Party. Welsh national feeling grew over the century; Plaid Cymru was formed in 1925 and the Welsh Language Society in 1962. Established under the Government of Wales Act 1998, the National Assembly for Wales holds responsibility for a range of devolved policy matters.

Northern Ireland is variously described as a country, province or region which is part of the United Kingdom. Located in the northeast of the island of Ireland, Northern Ireland shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. In 2011, its population was 1,810,863 constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the UK's population. The major city of the country is Belfast.

The Kingdom of Scotland emerged as an independent sovereign state in the European Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707. By inheritance in 1603, James VI of Scotland became king of England and Ireland, thus forming a personal union of the three kingdoms. Scotland subsequently entered into a political union with England on 1 May 1707 to create the new Kingdom of Great Britain.

  1. The United Kingdom is the 22nd largest country in the world, the fourth largest in Europe, and the third largest in the European Union by population. The United Kingdom is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe. 671 people live in every square mile, that’s 259 people per square kilometre. The UK population increased by more than 500,000 people in 2015.
  2. Immigration is a sensitive political topic in the UK, and was a major factor in the country’s 2016 decision to leave the European Union. London, the capital city, is also the largest city in the UK. In 2015 the population of London was 8,673,713 people.
  3. England is only one of the four nations living there. The others are Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Вывод

We found out that the greater part of the students would prefer living as closer to London as possible. This is definetely connected with cultural features of the city and the amount of attractive places for tourists.
