School Uniforms and Rules of Behaviour in the UK and the USA

1) During our research, we found out that the attitude to school clothes and behaviour rules is completely different in the UK and the USA. We started by reading the official school rules and real timetables from both countries. Our main task was to understand how these rules affect students' everyday life.

2) In the UK, school uniforms are almost universal, especially in secondary schools. According to the official UK government guidelines, schools must make sure that uniforms are affordable for families, but the rules are still very strict. Students usually have to wear grey trousers or skirts, white shirts, and navy jackets. There are also strict rules about jewellery, hairstyles, and make-up. If a student breaks the uniform rule, they can be sent home to change clothes.

3) In contrast, the USA has no national school uniform policy. Most public high schools do not require uniforms. Students usually wear casual clothes like T-shirts, jeans, and trainers. We read an interview with Matt, a freshman from Chicago, who said he can wear whatever he wants. However, some private or very strict American schools still require boys to wear formal trousers, a shirt, and a tie.

4) We also compared the daily timetables and rules about behaviour. British schools usually start at 8:30 or 9:00 and end around 3:25. The school day is very structured, and students must follow a strict code of conduct. American high schools often start a bit earlier, around 8:00, and finish at 3:15. In the USA, the rules mostly focus on safety and not wearing inappropriate clothes, rather than on strict discipline.

5) Another difference is extracurricular activities. Even though both countries have clubs after school, American schools offer a huge variety of them, from robotics to Model UN. In the UK, clubs are also popular, but they are often more focused on sports and music.

6) We also looked at graduation requirements. In the USA, students need to get a certain number of credits to graduate high school. For example, in some states, they need 22 to 26 credits. In the UK, students take national GCSE exams at the age of 16, which is very different from the American system.

7) Overall, our research shows that the UK has a more traditional and strict approach to school rules and uniforms, while the USA gives students more personal freedom. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages, but they perfectly reflect the cultural values of each country.
