Тема исследования группы

Как английский язык стал глобальным: исторические, экономические и культурные факторы

Проблемный вопрос (вопрос для исследования)

How did English become a global language?

In the course of working on this project—which involved studying articles, watching documentaries, and analyzing statistics—we arrived at the following findings:

1. The British Empire: "The sun never sets" Our research confirmed that colonization provided the initial impetus. By the time of Elizabeth I, only about 7 million people spoke English, and it was of little significance outside the British Isles. However, the acquisition of territories in North America, India, Africa, and Australia led to English becoming the language of administration and trade across vast regions. It is important to note that this was not because the language itself was "better," but rather a result of how history unfolded.

2. The USA: A New Center of Power Following World War II, Britain began to lose its influence, but the United States took up the mantle. The American economy, scientific and technological sectors (especially following the creation of the internet), and mass culture (Hollywood, music) solidified the position of the English language. We have found that, in today’s world, the majority of international business transactions, scientific papers, and communications in aviation take place in English—simply because it is the most convenient option for the major players in the global market.

3. The "Snowball Effect" and Neutrality An interesting finding emerged from our analysis of the phenomenon known as BELF (Business English as a Lingua Franca). It turns out that in modern business—and on the internet—English is primarily used by non-native speakers. For instance, when a German company and a Chinese company correspond, they do so in English, with little concern for whether their usage is "correct" by British standards. The primary goal is simply mutual understanding. This demonstrates that the language has become detached from its original creators and has evolved into a global tool.

4. Why not Esperanto? We also examined attempts to create an artificial universal language (Esperanto). These failed because Esperanto lacked an army, an economy, and a culture to back it up. English prevailed not because it is beautiful, but because it was backed by power.

Вывод

English became a global language not because of its linguistic simplicity, but because of a chain of historical events: the colonial expansion of the British Empire, the industrial and technological revolution, and the economic and cultural dominance of the United States in the 20th century. If you look at only one factor (for example, only at colonisation or only at American movies), the picture will be incomplete. But if you take all these factors together, as we showed in our mental map, it becomes clear why English — and not Chinese, Spanish or Esperanto — became the language of international communication. Moreover, in the 21st century English is no longer owned by native speakers alone: it has become a neutral tool used by people of different nationalities, and this is exactly what keeps it global.
