Why is it difficult for teenagers to choose a future profession today?

Гипотеза исследования

Мы считаем, что на выбор будущей профессии влияет множество факторов, от цифровых медиа до ближайших друзей и знакомых, из чего следует, что необходимо тщательно продумать индивидуальный путь профессионального становления подростка.

Цели исследования

Проанализировать ключевые факторы, влияющие на выбор профессии современными подростками;
Провести опрос среди учеников 10 класса о роли цифровых медиа в формировании современных представлений о различных профессиях;
Определить экономические условия, определяющие основные профессиональные предпочтения подростка;
Создать кластер профессий, которые является наиболее привлекательными для современных подростков.

Результаты проведённого исследования

Our study about how teenagers choose their future jobs showed that digital media, money, and how they see their own abilities all play a big role. A key thing we found was that social media is super important for what jobs they want. For example, almost 75% of the 10th graders we asked said they first heard about their “dream jobs” on YouTube and TikTok. Influencers often show off the cool parts of being a content creator, game developer, or digital marketer. But, we also found that many students didn’t really know about the hard work and schooling those jobs take.

Our survey about social media showed it really changes what teens think about jobs. They liked jobs that are popular online and let them be creative. Jobs like engineering or trades were seen as safe but “boring” because they weren’t as visible online. We also saw that if a job looked good online, students wanted to do it, even if they didn’t know much about it.

Money was also a big deal. Students wanted jobs that paid well and let them move up in the world. They worried about having a secure job and paying for things, so they picked high-paying jobs, even if they weren’t super excited about them. For example, finance, law, and tech were popular because they seemed to offer good salaries and job security.

In the end, we saw two main types of jobs that teens wanted. One group was creative and tech-focused, like software development and social media. The other was more stable, like nursing and business. This means that teens need good career advice that shows them both the cool, new jobs and the importance of safe, secure careers that they enjoy.

Teenagers today face a complex decision-making process when choosing a future profession due to the overwhelming influence of multiple factors, ranging from digital media portrayals to the opinions of their immediate social circle. This abundance of information and influences can lead to confusion and a lack of clarity regarding their individual career paths.

Social media plays a dominant role in shaping teenagers’ perceptions of various professions. The idealized and often unrealistic portrayals presented by influencers and content creators significantly impact their career aspirations, leading them to favor professions that are visually appealing and offer perceived opportunities for creativity and self-expression. However, this influence often comes at the expense of a realistic understanding of the challenges and educational requirements associated with these careers. Economic factors, particularly the desire for financial security and upward mobility, are significant drivers in teenagers’ career choices. Concerns about job stability and the rising cost of living often lead them to prioritize high-paying professions, even if they are not necessarily passionate about those fields. Modern teenagers demonstrate a dual approach to choosing a profession, demonstrating both idealistic aspirations in creative and high-tech fields, as well as practical considerations regarding a stable and secure career in healthcare and business. This highlights the importance of comprehensive career guidance counseling, which not only introduces them to a wider range of professions, but also helps them develop a realistic understanding of the skills, education, and fulfillment associated with various career paths. Career counseling should aim to balance the attractiveness of modern digital-based professions with the need to ensure long-term career security and personal enjoyment. Ultimately, teenagers need guidance to navigate these difficult conditions and develop a well-founded and individual plan for their professional development.
