When you think about ukulele you think of Hawaii and it may have been started in the place and have adapted with the tradition. It is in the 19th century history that you can find how ukuleles started. It was when the Portuguese immigrants arrived in Hawaii to work in sugar cane fields. Their European culture was combined with Hawaii, particularly their music. Their typical musical stringed-instruments, rajao and the braguinha were fused into one to make the ukulele.

It was the Portuguese immigrants named Manuel Nunes, Jose de Espirito Santo, together with Augusto Dias who carpenters and made cabinets were created the very first ukuleles in Hawaii. They made a new instrument which is the ukulele and played every night with it where many people liked it and was fascinated by it. It was the Hawaiian King David Kalakaua in 1886 that called it taro patch fiddles. He was amused by the instrument and began playing with it and his chamberlain named Edward Purvis excelled in playing the instrument. His chamberlain was nicknamed ukulele which means jumping flea because while he played the instrument his fingers jumps just like the fleas and since then the instrument was identified as ukulele.

There are some contentions in regards to the source of the name. No doubt that the term 'ukelele' means jumping flea, yet some think it came from the quick paced, jumpy movements made by the Portuguese men who initially created the instrument rather than the reputation of Edward Purvis.

Right after the positive reception the ukulele attained, one of its inventors, Manual Nunes, made a decision to start his own ukulele production company, better-known as M. Nunes and Sons. In the mid-20th century, ukuleles kept their popularity, with many other companies starting to create them. However, the '70s saw a decline in demand and a significant shutdown in ukulele workshops.

The good news about ukuleles is that their sales are once more increasing. Due to some leading musical innovators, like musician Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and recognized music teacher Michael Carolin, the ukulele is being esteemed for all of the advantages it can bring to a cultured and cohesive society. The truly unique sound made by a ukuleles makes it an instrument that is being incorporated into the music of many performers, such as prominent Hollywood musicians such as Jason Mraz and Taylor Swift! What's more, the ukulele's rich history and message of cultural integration makes it the perfect instrument for a music teacher who wants his pupils to not only learn to make great music, but also to be accepting and awesome people.

It appears like ukulele has made it back to the limelight once again. It is in this era that lanikai ukulele continues to motivate other people and culture with its great sound.
