The holiday season can present a challenge to anyone who's dieting, even people who do fine the rest of the year. It's not only the major meals where everyone eats to capacity, but also the countless parties and social gatherings most of us attend this time of year. It's very hard to give much thought to healthy and moderate eating when everyone is putting all kinds of sweets and goodies in front of you every day. Lots of people just give in to the idea that it's better to give up on dieting and living a healthy lifestyle during the holidays. You can, of course, take this approach and start dieting again in January -quite a few pounds heavier, in all likelihood. But what if you're really determined to not gain weight, or even lose it during the holidays? If you want to stay loyal to your diet and exercise program all through the holidays, it can be done.
Make sure you keep up with your exercise program, and even throw it into overdrive. That way, you'll be able to work off those calories you take in at holiday meals and parties. You probably won't be able to say "no" to all of the temptations. It comes down to physics -you don't have to avoid every cookie, piece of candy or helping of mashed potatoes as long as you know you're going to work it off. Even if your schedule is full, you can find creative ways to burn off calories, whether it's taking stairs instead of the elevator or taking a walk during your lunch break. If you're pressed for time, investigate some exercise tools and programs that can be convenient to fit it whenever possible.
Keep close track of what you eat all day long by writing it down somewhere. This will inform you of how much work you need to do when you exercise. It's easy to lose track of what you've eaten throughout the day, but doing this will keep you on top of it. One advantage to doing this method is that you'll often find that you haven't cheated on your diet as much as you thought. The mind can operate in strange ways -we can thoughtlessly eat a small piece of candy and turn it into an excuse for eating the whole box. Keeping a written record, however, prevents your mind from playing such deceptive tricks on you.
You need to use healthy ingredients when you cook. This is going to seem like a "duh" kind of hint but you would be amazed at how much people indulge in things like real butter, fatty foods, lots of sugar, etc during the holidays. Is there some kind of unwritten rule that thick, rich and heavy are needed to describe holiday foods? You can make all of the same dishes you love but in healthier ways and they will still taste just as good. Do some research to see if you can't come up with the healthiest ways possible to make the foods you love and you won't have to worry about those extra holiday pounds quite as fretfully.
Keeping your weight under control during the holiday season takes some effort, but it's certainly possible. If you want to emerge from the holidays without any extra pounds, you can do so. You can stick to your diet, keep up your weight loss regimen and stay healthy -even while sometimes indulging in tasty treats and decadent holiday meals.
