Film Review of Footloose

As a young person rising up in the 80's, the original 'Footloose' was the go-to film for memorable quotes, traditional dance moves, and the most effective throughout "sticking it to authority figures" storyline a woman my age at that time may dream of. Imagine my pleasure, then, when a few decades or so later, a remake of Footloose has me feeling almost as giddy as my former thirteen yr previous self-and the urge to get up and dance was calling my name---LOUDLY.

THE GOOD: I will be completely honest and say that, though I liked the unique version of the movie, there is part of me that feels just a bit bit embarrassed after I watch it now---mostly because of the dated hair and clothes styles. And let's be frank: who dances like that anymore? I mean, in addition to nerdy center aged individuals like myself. The eighty's version is a traditional and has it's appeal, however you might be probably going to be onerous pressed to get many of immediately's generation to see it as anything apart from "a lame movie that my parents made me watch". That's quoting considered one of my teenage sons, verbatim. So, given all that, I used to be thrilled with the thought of updating an already great movie, in hopes that a whole new technology may recognize it. And the added bonus is that it has given me a brand new model to love as well.

It is exhausting to switch an actor like Kevin Bacon in the function of Ren McCormack, the massive metropolis kid who moves to small town Bomont after the demise of his mom, to live with his Aunt and Uncle-but Kenny Wormald does the half justice and was an amazing choice. He has the look and angle of somebody who definitely would not belong in an uptight neighborhood that has outlawed public dancing, because of the tragic dying of some teenagers several years earlier. Then he meets Ariel (performed by Julianne Hough), the preacher's troubled daughter, and he finds his struggles with the town authorities are just beginning. And may I simply add here: the boy can dance. Most people know that Julianne Hough has a lot of expertise in this area as well, but Wormald can definitely hold his own. The storyline varies a little bit from the unique, but I beloved how it stayed true to most of the iconic scenes, particularly the 'offended dance routine' within the warehouse---this time around there is a lot anger and frustration felt, it type of makes Kevin Bacon's version appear like he was skipping by means of a poppy field. And as glorious as all the brand new solid members were, the standout was clearly Miles Teller who performs Willard, the back woods country boy who befriends Ren-and who absolutely CANNOT dance. He was incredibly humorous and charming, and watching him move in the long run was just plain fun.

THE BAD: Though I discussed that some creative license was taken with the storyline, many of the dialogue from the unique was in place-which wasn't at all times a optimistic thing. I feel that when you find yourself remaking a film and attempting to modernize it a little bit, it's perfectly okay to update the wording of conversations as well. Some tacky strains remained---though, in equity, the up to date dance moves kind of made up for it. On a personal word, the unique was filmed (partially) in my mom's homecity of Lehi, Utah, so I've to admit I used to be slightly dissatisfied that the outdated Lehi Roller Mills was nowhere to be seen in this new take--of course,Lehi is now not the tiny town it was 30 years in the past, and I think the aforementioned Roller Mills now has a Walmart and a Taco John's on either facet, which most likely wouldn't contribute to that small town feeling they had been aiming for. Change is inevitable I guess.

THE UGLY: Usually that is the a part of my assessment where I hold forth about folks or plotlines within the film that were simply BEYOND unbearable, however this time around, I've very little to complain about. However, if Southern redneck trailer trash offends you, be warned that Chuck Cranston (performed by Patrick John Flueger) and his buddies are about one step away from hillbilly inbreds. Nonetheless, they are not almost as offensive as I believed Lori Singer (the actress who performed the unique 'Ariel') was. Just sayin'.

Although I'll always love the original version of Footloose-regardless of it's bad wardrobe choices-this 2011 model has given me a complete new solid to understand and new dance strikes to include into my repertoire---well, perhaps in my head at least. Possibly I may even persuade my son that THIS Footloose is actually type of cool. Or whatever word they use now for "actually good".
