4. Teach Him the Concept of Gentleness

Your toddler may not like the idea of sharing your love with the newest member of the family, but that doesn't mean he's not excited about becoming a big brother. Sometimes, this excitement can turn into rough play. Tell him that babies like gentle touches and have him practice on a doll or stuffed animal.

5. Give Him a Role in Taking Care of the Baby

Though he may not admit it, your toddler probably wants to take part in caring for his sibling. When you're changing the baby's diaper, tell him how it's done. He won't be able to do it, for sure, but by doing so, you are sort of letting him in on a big secret. Show him what big brothers do for their little brothers or sisters. You can assign him little responsibilities such as bringing the baby's bottle, singing to the baby, or picking up toys from the floor.

As your family becomes bigger, your toddler will go through some ups and downs. Shower him with hugs and kisses so that he won't feel he's been replaced.

My toddler has recently fallen in love with an adorable monkey pajamas sleeper. She refuses to take it off. Ever. Not for daily errands, not for laundry day or even visits to Grandma. As much as I like to let the little things slide, this was going too far. After one and a half days, the pajamas had to come off. It was dirty and wasn't exactly the correct mode of dress for the library. I cajoled, I reasoned and eventually I just took them off. She had a full blown, loud, dramatic and award winning tantrum. Tantrums are no fun at all for parents, but it comes with the toddler package, and you have to learn how to deal with it.

Toddlers are prone to tantrums. They throw them when they want control, more independence or can't fully express their wants and needs. Here are some tips for riding out your next toddler tantrum.

When your toddler throws a tantrum try to figure out what triggered it. Is he hungry, tired, uncomfortable or is he just being manipulative? If your shopping in the mall and your toddler has a meltdown he may just be overheated in his winter coat. Knowing what triggers the tantrum is the first step in preventing it in the future and calming him down faster.

The first thing you should do when your toddler gets completely carried away is to step back and observe. Let him express his frustrations for a while, as long as he is doing it in a safe fashion. Though he may not admit it, your toddler probably wants to take part in caring for his sibling. When you're changing the baby's diaper, tell him how it's done. He won't be able to do it, for sure, but by doing so, you are sort of letting him in on a big secret.
