Technology has made life easier in a lot of ways, but in some ways it has made it worse at the same time.  With each passing generation, more children are tied to the indoors and therefore miss out on the adventures to be found outside, particularly on camping trips.  Luckily, you can still make a difference in the life of a sedentary, electronics-addicted child.  If you take the proper steps, you can plan a camping trip that your whole family will love.

Your first step in enjoying a successful camping outing is to make sure that you are realistic in planning a trip that your kids can enjoy.  Make sure the location and activities are appropriate for the age and abilities of your children.  For example, taking a toddler white water rafting is not the wisest decision you could make.

Moreover, the activities should meet with approval from the kids.  A child that has no initial interest in the outdoors may be a bit resistant to a four-hour lecture on the rare Palos Verdes blue butterfly, but might enjoy catching and releasing a few species.  Likewise an adventurous kid is not going to be happy with just camping and sleeping and no adrenaline-rush adventures.

Packing and planning with your children is a good way to get them involved and interested.  If feasible, let them pick from two or three approved locations.  They might be interested in deciding which foods to take.  Ask your children to give their ideas for fun activities to do while camping.  They might want to go hiking, swimming, or horseback riding, or they might want to cook out and surprise the family with a meal they prepared alone.

You can help them understand how important nature is by enjoying it to the fullest.  Go on hikes and point out the various animals and plant life that you see on the way.  Have the kids sketch what they see in a notebook.  Teach your children safety and respect for nature, traits that will be put to good use with all the opportunities camping provides.

Practice camping overnight in the backyard.  Practice hiking and spending the day outside with local day trips and hikes.

Avoid turning small situations into disasters by being prepared.  For instance, you know that it is often cold at night or first thing in the morning. You can mitigate this situation by bringing appropriate clothing and bedding along with you.  You will be camping and that might mean mud and water, so pack extra clothes, shoes and socks.  While getting good and dirty is fun, being wet is miserable.  Insect repellent, rain coats, sunscreen, and a well-stocked first aid kit are all essential items to bring on a camping trip. You should also be prepared to treat insect bites and rashes.

You must also be prepared for the fact that your kids might not be as enthusiastic about getting away from home as you are.  It might help to bring along a favorite toy.  Make up a comfy bed for your youngsters so they feel secure and cozy.  You may think it's great to sleep under the stars with a rock for a pillow, but that may turn your children off to camping forever.  Consider investing in a disposable camera, whistle, and flashlight for each child.  Toys and games are great to bring for when your children don't have anything to do.  Find out ahead of time if you can bring bicycles, swimming gear, or sports gear to the campsite.

Since the purpose of the camping trip is to have fun, try not to be a militaristic fun sponge.  While some activities should be planned, also give children space to be themselves and establish their own connection to nature.  Be spontaneous.  Play jump rope with your kids or roast some marshmallows.  Get a soccer game going or play tag.  This will make the trip more fun for the kids.  Kids love a chance to play games and get dirty.  Camping trips should include plenty of involvement from the kids.  Make them a crucial part of the team by including them in everything.  No matter what happens on the trip, keep a smile on your face and your children will too.

If you take the time to plan for most contingencies, you can turn your camping trip into an event your kids will remember forever.  Create opportunities for your kids to get outside whenever they can and assist in reversing the sedentary trend the kids of the future are facing.  Pretty soon, they'll be begging you to come outdoors with them.
