It's a lot of fun to grow your own plants as a hobby, but you can benefit in other ways - such as having fresh herbs, beautiful flowers, and home-grown vegetables for your table. It's also great to simply grow plants and flowers for their decorative value, whether you're planting them indoors or outdoors. Yet there's a lot to learn about growing plants if you want them to be healthy, and in this article we'll be providing you with some useful tips to help you develop a green thumb.

The first thing to consider is the soil you will be using. It doesn't matter what you want to grow, this is the first key to success. Different plants require different types of soil. Plants tend to fall into two groups: those that like a soil that is alkaline in nature and those that prefer an acidic environment. You can either plan your garden around the soil you already have, or you can alter your soil so it's good for the type of plants you want to grow. This is a simple matter if you plant in containers or individual pots. You can buy exactly the type of soil required for each plant. The soil you have in your yard may be just fine for a garden; however, it's necessary to have it tested so you will know for sure and can be confident of growing healthy plants. Another tip that a lot of gardeners follow is to start the seedlings for their outside garden in small peat pots indoors. You get a head-start on the planting season by doing this and, when the conditions are proper, you can transplant the plants outside into your garden. This is especially easy if you use peat pots because you can plant the pots right along with the plants. Seedlings growing in pots have a better chance of survival, as they don't have to contend with harsh weather conditions and are less vulnerable to pests. You can then plant them outside when they've become hardier. This method is successful regardless of the type of plant you are planning to grow - flowers, vegetables, or herbs for example. Just because you are planting your seeds in pots indoors, doesn't mean you can ignore their individual light and water requirements.

While everyone knows that plants need water, it's still very common for people to not give their plants the right amount of water. This is actually one of the most common reasons why plants don't thrive. You simply can't just water each plant with the same amount of water. Look each plant over, check the moisture content in the soil, and then decide how much water they actually need. Plants grown indoors in containers are especially vulnerable to being over-watered and this can be as damaging as not giving them enough water. Root rot is the problem that houseplants can suffer from. If the leaves on your plants are turning yellow, you may be giving them too much water and depriving the roots of much needed oxygen.

The plant growing tips we've explored in this article are just a few factors to keep in mind to keep your plants healthy. If you treat your plants right, and give them the care and attention they need, they will reward you. Remember, they are living things also. When you are checking your plants, don't skip over any plant that looks sickly. Make an effort to find out the cause and correct it. If you don't know what the problem is - and it's usually tied to how much or little you water - ask someone at the local nursery or garden center. Perhaps your soil needs a special nutrient for that plant?
