Cosatu tried to intervene in the dispute on Tuesday, after 588 workers were dismissed following their two month-long strike.

The striking workers have not been keen for either Cosatu and its affiliate, the Communication Workers Union’s (CWU), to get involved in the dispute.

CWU Gauteng treasurer Bonang Pitso said the union battled to intervene in the illegal strike due to the "tense" situation. Workers had grown hostile towards the union and made it difficult for its leaders to address them.

The illegal industrial action has resulted in a revenue loss of R97m and has cost the Post Office R6m in overtime, in addition to the huge backlog in postal deliveries.

Workers say they were tricked into believing that the Post Office owed them an exorbitant sum of money — about R5m each — in "salary anomaly" pay.

Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini addressed the dismissed workers at the Witspos depot in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, promising to help them to get their jobs back.

He also undertook to get to the bottom of the situation which had led them to believe that they were owed the money.

"Whether the money is there or not is not an issue for now, if it happened that people were given the wrong information, we have to find out," he told journalists after meeting workers.

"If the money is owed to the workers, then they must have it, but if indeed they were misled, then it is a very, very sad situation."

In a statement on Tuesday, the Post Office confirmed that an employee was arrested in connection with the scam. "The strike originated from misinformation by some employees who wanted to extort money from unsuspecting employees," the Post Office said.

It confirmed that the alleged claim was for a payout which ran into "billions" and has been found to be "incorrect and baseless".

The Post Office said it was important to highlight that it did not owe employees any money.

Workers told Mr Dlamini on Tuesday that Cosatu was welcome to intervene in the matter — but warned that their demands were twofold: receiving their money and getting their jobs back.

One worker, Denzil Hollande, remained convinced that the money was owed to him and that he would receive his share within two days.

"We are not getting it from the trees, we saw the documents, the documents directly from the court. We are not making it up," he said.

Mr Hollande, a father of two who had been employed at the Post Office for 18 years, said according to the information workers had received three payments of R16m, R32m and R35m owed to them annually.

He said a union representative had informed workers about the payments due to them in 2010. Workers tried to get the union to follow up on the matter later, but it failed to do so, resulting in employees taking matters into their own hands.

South African Post Office group executive for mail business, Janras Kotsi said the company had about 15 days of backlog work. "We are gradually getting to normal levels of staff," he said.

Universities are closed for the Easter holidays. The University of South Africa (Unisa), South Africa’s main distance learning university had struggled to get documents to students.

"We used couriers to ease the problems. Hopefully the Post Office will work through its backlogs as quickly as possible," Unisa spokesman Martin Ramotshela said on Tuesday.[http://www.discountsoftwareau.com/office-2010-download-c-2.html Buy Microsoft Office 2010 Download - Australia - Discount Software Store]
