The art of Chinese Wing Tsun Kung-Fu was described by the ancient masters as a 'living philosophy.'

With reaching the highest levels of teaching in Wing Tsun, you will be taught how to understand yourself as well as how to interact with other human beings. Combining the principles of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, the practice of Wing Tsun is focused on enshrining its fundamental concepts in those who practice it. Some of the important ideals that Wing Tsun will try to teach, are true appreciation of humor, loyalty and dignity. It is also important that people learn to respect others, control their emotions and tempter, and to control their own ego. A person will never master himself without these, or the art of Wing Tsun, as these two are synonymous.

Because this art has these unique characteristics this art is currenly referred to as 'the noble Wing Tsun'. Student development and progression is the primary goal of Wing Tsun. In fact, 'Si-Fu' translates as 'Father-Teacher', signifying the role of the Master as he takes on the responsibility of his 'todai' (son). This is different than other martial art forms, like karate where the term sensei means teacher.

The three main features of Wing Tsun is Physical, Health and Spiritual. To find schools that teach these three together is unfortunately rare. While physical methods can be duplicated, spiritual understanding needs a real master. As a student progresses and develops their physical technique, that student will also develop as a person, this is one of the most important lessons in Wing Tsun.

You don't have to be Chinese to understand the martial arts, you just need to comprehend the teachings from the Masters, both the Masters of past and the Masters of today. However, without appreciating the historical and social background, it is not possible. Properly learning the martial art is important before changing any part of it, as to not undermine the basic foundations. read more...

If you take away the etiquette or culture then you take away the history. If you take away the history of the martial art, then what are you learning? Simply a series of moves without any principles behind them. This really is not a true martial art.

It is not uncommon for people to want to understand all forms of Martial Arts just as some people want to understand the Solar System and how politicians think. Hilaire Barnett was clear on this point in her book Constitutional and Administrative Law stating "to study the UK's constitution , it is necessary to gain an insight into the history, politics and political philosphy which underpin the constitution, it is an essential component without which the structure, law and policies of the state cannot be understood."
