BOICEVILLE, N.Y. — After a year-and-a-half of work, Maverick Family Health has reopened its office here that was ravaged by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011.

The office, at 4080 state Route 28, will host a reopening celebration at 1 p.m. today and will mark its 30th year of service to area residents and visitors.

Staffers of Maverick Family Health, Kingston Physical Therapy and Bio-Reference Labs will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the event and provide tours of the renovated facility.

Three feet of water filled the Maverick office during Irene and ruined everything inside. The building itself — which Maverick partners Randy Rissman, Martin Krakower and Brian Callahan acquired and renovated only a few months before the storm — was severely damaged, leaving Maverick and other tenants without offices.“There was a half-million (dollars) in damages,” Rissman said, shaking his head.

Rissman said Maverick’s insurance coverage fell short, leaving the partners on the hook for about $200,000, but that the Federal Emergency Management Agency helped.

Rissman said he and his partners thought about cutting their losses and getting out but then considered the nearly 900 patients whose charts were floating in the flood water. That reminded them, he said, that those people’s health care had to take priority over the cost of repairs.

“Some people might have run the other way from this,” Rissman said. “But we wanted to commit to the community. The country is looking at not enough family doctors, and we pride ourselves as being the good guys.”

Rissman said the recovery effort has been worthwhile.
