Drug issues have greatly influenced the modern society in a negative way, more than it did in the past decades. This springs form the fact that with modernization things are always evolving with new stuff coming into the global scene. Hence, drugs too have taken a turn for the worse. The variations of drugs is high, and people have learnt and developed ingenious ways of achieve the optimum high from the least of drugs available. That shows the unprecedented grip that substance abuse has on today's society.

The rotten vice is well noted, but it receives little attention, which is in unison with the little elements of people within the society that are deep into drug abuse. Addiction and loss of life are the biggest results that arise in substance abuse. Take for instance alcohol, a social drink that has worldwide accolades and brand product variation. Yet, the drug has managed to bring many into bondage of abuse it, making them take alcohol like prescription drugs - three times a day. Alcoholism is a social problem since it is about abuse of a drug. For years, a war on tobacco smoking has been brewing, and in some countries the war is won and cigarettes are totally burned from being openly sold to the public. Many say the same hard calls thrown on smoking of marijuana should be levied on cigarettes.

The overall fight against most of the substances abused today is not flung directly against the users, or the intermediate merchants (drug peddlers). The fight is towards the big fish who manufacture these drugs. However, this tactic seems to avail very little headway in putting an end to substance abuse especially because those who make the drugs have connection that run high in the administrative authorities. Hence, activist and social movements that campaign against the social vice of drug abuse have adopted a new approach. Creating awareness of the effects of drugs is the way to keep many of the chains that come with drug issues.
