Formosa, as Taiwan used to be called, comes from the Portuguese word for beautiful. If you were to schedule a trip to this Oriental jewel, you will understand just why this land has been so richly prized for centuries. With lush mountains, pulsating cities, excellent hiking opportunities, and some of the planet's best hot springs, it is no surprise that Taiwan is often described as being amongst the most diverse destinations in all Asia.

Although many people do not think of Taiwan as being a must see destination, it is perhaps due to a lack of information on the country that it has been under the radar for last few decades in terms of global tourism. What is for sure is that within the country's borders lies a world full of cultural influences and contrasts the like of which are unavailable elsewhere in Asia. It offers a heady mix of personal freedom, thrilling cities, and a timeless culture.

During these times of rapid change and increasing global travel connections, Taiwan is attracting travelers from all walks of life. It is a destination for those individuals seeking spiritual uplift, visitors in search of the latest high-tech gadgets, and people who appreciate the intricacies of the respectful culture and populous.

On the surface, the country may seem ultra modern, but scratch the surface and you will find a land soaked in history and old fashioned beliefs. The Taiwanese are known throughout Asia as being incredibly warm and affable. Even today visitors as still welcomed with "Renqing Wei", translated as meaning personal affection.

Almost every visitor who makes the journey to Taiwan begins their travels in Taipei. Though at first glance the capital city may appear slightly generic, it is rich in temples, museums, and world class shopping opportunities. Of note are Green Island, Sun Moon Lake, Taroko Gorge, Hualien, Kenting, Maolin, and Lugang. Whatever your interests, you will not be left feeling unfulfilled.

The world has changed beyond recognition since Portuguese explorers first set their gaze on Taiwan's shores. But if this same group of intrepid seafarers were able to book a flight to the island, it is likely they would still call it Formosa. Though the modern world has forever changed the land and the people, the beauty that exists here is still apparent.
